Chasetown FC’s goalkeeping coach has insisted the club will bounce back from the disappointment of relegation.

The Scholars suffered final day heartache as a rollercoaster 4-4 draw at Burscough saw them miss out on survival by the narrowest of margins.

The club are still without a manager after Chris Brindley was axed in the lead-up to that game, although they are nearing a decision on the next man in the hotseat.

But John Birt – who worked under Brindley and his predecessor Charlie Blakemore – believes Chasetown can bounce straight back.

“I’m totally gutted,” he said. “It really hurt to score four in the last game and still not win.

“But you don’t go down on one game – it’s over a season.

“We’ll bounce back, though. The key is a appointing a new manager and I just hope I can be a part of the future.”

Birt, who turned out for the Scholars during his playing days, paid tribute to the supporters who backed the side throughout a troubling season.

“The supporters wgho went to Burscough were different class as they have been all season. They deserved better.”
