A new supermarket is set to open its doors in Barton-under-Needwood.

The Midlands Co-operative Society store will be given an official opening on May 16.

The new store on the site of the derelict petrol station will replace the existing Co-op in the village.

Cllr Ed Sharkey, Vice Chairman of Barton-under-Needwood Parish Council, said: “This is an exciting time for the village and the new store and car park will be great assets, tidying up an area which has been a real eyesore for far too long.

“The Parish Council has been pleased to work with the Midlands Co-operative to try to develop a store design that works well on this important site within the Village Conservation Area.”

The redevelopment has also seen the public car park next to the Village Hall enlarged to create over 60 parking spaces. New drainage, lighting and surfacing with lined-out parking spaces and a one-way traffic system have also been introduced.

The new store will be open 7am to 10pm, seven days a week.
