Church choir to start fundraising walk at Lichfield Cathedral

Members of a church choir are taking part in a 21 mile walk from Lichfield Cathedral to raise money for their organ.

The fundraising vocalists will travel to the city from St Michael and All Angels Church in Penkridge on September 1 as part of their attempts to raise a four-figure sum towards the estimated £80,000 bill to restore their 125 year-old organ.

The walk mirrors a similar event that took place 34 years ago when the choir walked from Westminster Abbey to Penkridge to help raise £50,000 towards the restoration of the church roof.

John Aldridge, chairman of the Organ Restoration Appeal Committee, said: “The organ is the focal point of our beautiful Grade 1 Listed Church and as there have been no significant changes to the organ since 1888.

“It is a very rare instrument that we want to preserve. It has such a unique sound and can effectively play music from the 16th to the 21st Centuries.”
