However, the club didn’t need to look far for a replacement as Holt was given the chance to step up after two spells in charge of the reserves, totalling six years. He has also involved with the club as a junior and enjoyed a spell at the club as a player, scoring four goals on his senior debut aged just 18.

“It’s a shock that Russell has left,” Holt said. “He was well liked at the club and I definitely learned from working with him.

“He’s a good friend and I wish him well for the future along with Stuart Hamilton and Steve McCarten. However, the club has to move on.”

A victory in his first game will have done Holt’s cause no harm as he quickly galvanised the players.

And after a shaky start to life in the Midland Combination Premier Division, the new manager is hoping a fresh start will pay dividends.

“It’s been a big step up this year so it’s all about consolidation,” Holt explained. “I’m aiming for a top half of the table finish, though.

“The club has great infrastructure. We have 23 teams from under sixes through to the first team and there is some real talent coming through the ranks every year.

“I’ll be working closely with the coaches and looking to bring these youngsters through the successful youth team and reserve team so they can make the step up to senior football.”

Holt’s move up to the first team at Lichfield has seen Scott Hamilton put in charge of the reserves – a decision which pleased the new City boss.

“Scott is a natural choice to make the step up as he’s someone I have a lot of respect for and is a good friend,” he said.

Holt will be hoping to continue his fine start to life in the top job at Brownsfield Park when takes charge of his first home game against Southam United on Saturday (September 22), kick-off 3pm.
