Review: Nancy Kerr and James Fagan @ Lichfield Guildhall

James Fagan and Nancy Kerr

James Fagan and Nancy Kerr

With a sound that fused elements of Appalachian folk and Bluegrass, with traditional music the award winning duo of Nancy Kerr and James Fagan returned to Lichfield Guildhall to play a set that featured virtuoso musicianship, impeccable singing, fine arrangements, and high quality covers, as well as their own distinctive songs.

The set featured such traditional standards as Barbara Allen, Nancy Taylor and Dance to your Daddy but gave them new treatment, with Nancy Kerr’s strong vocals pushed to the fore, and strong accompaniment from guitarist James, whilst the violin playing, which was played underneath the vocals often defied belief.

The duo’s own songs were also strong, with Queen of Waters and Dolerite Skies’ both being about homecoming, while the story songs The Outside Track and I am the Fox featured, muscular, rhythmic counterpoints.

This was a fine concert, showing what could be done with a good imagination, enough technical knowledge to back up those ideas, and no end of musical talent.
