Police confirmed that a 54-year-old man had been questioned on Friday (March 15), before being released on bail.

The arrest of Cllr Lewin – whose identity was confirmed by sources – follows the release of a nine-minute video online by a vigilante who has previously claimed to be exposing sex offenders.

Cllr Lewin, who has twice been Mayor of Fazeley, has also been suspended by the Conservatives pending the outcome of the police probe.

He had been listed as a member of the party on both the Lichfield District Council and Fazeley Town Council websites, but has now seen his affiliation changed to “independent”, while his personal contact details for constituents have also been removed.

A spokesman said: “Staffordshire Police can confirm that a 54-year-old man from the Fazeley area has been released on police bail pending further investigation into an allegation of on offence under the Sexual Offences Act.”

Lichfield District Council also confirmed that they would be “supporting” the police investigation into “serious allegations”.
