Lichfield’s Beacon Park is getting ready to welcome a royal visitor.

HRH The Princess Royal will be in the city on April 24 to tour the work carried out as part of the Historic Parks Project, before rededicating a statue of King Edward VII to commemorate her visit.

“We are looking forward to presenting our award-winning Beacon Park to Princess Anne and welcoming many of our partners, who made the restoration work possible, who will be joining us for this important occasion,” said Cllr Val Richards.

“Teams across the council are busy making sure Beacon Park looks at its very best and we are all looking forward to this prestigious event.”

Following her arrival just after midday, Princess Anne will be led on a tour of Beacon Park, including Museum Gardens, the Recreation Grounds, the newly refurbished play area and the community gardening facility.

The visit is also set to include a Community Games event to showcase local junior sporting talent.

Just swallow your civic pride for a moment and reflect upon how Lichfield really looks at the moment. Lots of boarded up shops and scruffy buildings, A severe lack of car parking, litter all over the place especially around the roadsides and the railway stations. Lichfield used to be a gem; like a modern theme park with dancing in the streets, open air theatre and a vibrant market. Nowadays it is a drab and unkempt place. Beacon Park was left by Mr Swinfen Browne for the benefit of the City. Since then it has been built on, plowed up, and generally urbanised. Lets hope that things are beginning to improve.
