Burntwood RUFC suffer disappointing Edwardians defeat

Burntwood RUFC slipped a place in the table after a disappointing 28-18 defeat at home to Edwardians.

Like the week before, they gave themselves too much ground to make up following a one-sided first half which ended with the visitors leading 25-6.

The hosts had taken an early lead following a promising attack in the 3rd minute which earned a penalty for Aza Dune’t to slot home.

If this was meant to settle Burntwood into the game it didn’t work as Edwardians went 12-3 up within ten minutes. Their backs in particular seemed to enjoy the firm, flat playing surface as they used their pace and handling skills to good effect although Burntwood were also guilty of some slipshod tackling.

First, they ran a clearance kick back after five minutes and exploited a two on one for a try in the bottom corner which was excellently converted. Then, with eleven minutes gone, they ran a restart kick back following a failed penalty attempt and a missed tackle in midfield resulted in a second try in the corner, this time unconverted.

They went close again either side of two successful penalty kicks and Burntwood trailed 18-3 after 23 minutes and were yet to get out of the blocks.

Hal Gozukucuk fired them up with a burst into opposition territory which brought a second penalty goal for Dune’t. although another attempt on the half hour was off target.

Back came the visitors to run in a fine try from long range inspired by a swift break by the full back. The conversion took their tally up to 25.

Right on half time Burntwood were close to reducing the arrears when a good break by Dune’t took play deep into the opposition 22. The move broke down in midfield but play was called back for a penalty to the hosts. They chose to go for a close range catch and drive but the possession was knocked on.

A series of penalty decisions went against Burntwood to keep them on the back foot at the start of the second half and then Gozukucuk was sin binned for a high tackle to add to their problems. The resulting penalty completed Edwardians’ points scoring for the afternoon on 53 minutes.

Whilst Gozukucuk was off the field it was the home side which scored a touch down. Graham Shelley and Craig Prosser took play close to the visitors’ line. A penalty was awarded and skipper Ian Jones quickly tapped it to hooker Zak Shingler who darted over.

Burntwood were now dominating the play but were finding it difficult to find a way through the Eds’ defence which was up quickly every time.

With time running out Neal seized on an Edwardians’ error to feed Gozukucuk to put them in trouble but again the hosts couldn’t get over from close range.

As the contest went into time added on the home supporters finally had something to cheer about after Gozukucuk won turnover possession. Good handling by Craig Seedhouse, and Brett Taylor put Ben Holt in for a well-worked try which Dune’t converted.

There was still time for Edwardians to go close to adding to their winning margin but first a penalty attempt drifted left and then they managed to get over the line but lost the ball in the process.

Burntwood conclude their season this Saturday (April 27) with the visit of Stourbridge Lions who will be looking to win to clinch second spot in the table and promotion. Kick off 3pm.On Sunday Burntwood RFC host the finals of the Staffordshire Colts Cup and Plate Competitions. Admission is free.
