The National Memorial Arboretum will host survival skill sessions for young people after a pot of funding was secured.

More than £15,000 has been awarded by the MOD’s Armed Forces Community Covenant Grant Scheme to run the workshops for children at the Alrewas centre.

Youngsters taking part will get the chance to learn real skills used by serving armed forces, including building shelters, water filtration, orienteering and problem-solving.

Brigadier Gerhard Wheeler MBE, Commander of 143 (West Midlands) Brigade, said: “It is important for our children to understand the role of our Armed Forces.

“I think the project Survive! is a fun and innovative way of achieving this goal so we are pleased to support it.

“The value it will generate in bringing military and civilian communities closer together will be significant.”

The activities are open to any interested primary and secondary schools as a day trip for Year 3 upwards in year or mixed age groups. For more information contact Jane Rodd on 01543 370737 or email [email protected].
