Lichfield to London rail route sees passenger numbers rise by a quarter

The route between Lichfield and London has become one of the fastest growing in the UK.

London Midland say passenger numbers have risen by 28 per cent since the upgrade of their West Coast Main Line service in December.

The train operator said it put the success down to introducing quicker services which have cut journey times by around half-an-hour between Lichfield Trent Valley and London.

Spokesman David Whitley explained: “Frequent trains and great value fares have already proved a winning formula on the Trent Valley route, but the impact of these reduced journey times has exceeded all expectations.

“We inherited a service that was barely surviving five years ago. Today we’re looking at ways to run longer trains to meet demand. That’s a great place to be.”

Extra and longer trains are due to be introduced to the route in 2014 when London Midland takes delivery of 40 new carriages.
