A family fun day has been organised as a tribute to brave Lichfield mum Katie Scarbrough.

Friends of the fun-loving 32-year-old have organised the event at Burntwood Rugby Club on June 22 to raise funds for Katie’s chosen charities, Cancer Research UK and Bowel Cancer UK.

Katie had hoped to attend but she lost her battle with bowel cancer on May 2 at St Giles Hospice in Whittington.

The former junior ice-skating champion attracted followers from around the world when she wrote an online blog as a legacy for her children Sam (8) and Sophie (5). Celebrities following the blog included comedian Matt Lucas and England legend Bobby Moore’s widow Stephanie Moore MBE.

Lead organiser Sally Wyatt said she hoped the day would be a fitting tribute to Katie who was an “expert at having fun with the kids without spending too much”.

Activities on the day will include a child’s sports day race, bouncy castles and a rugby penalty shoot out for any budding Jonny Wilkinsons.

There will also be face painting, children’s rides, a licenced bar, cakes, ice cream and stalls.

The fun day is the latest in a string of fundraising events in honour of Katie, culminating in 40 of her friends taking part in Race for Life in Sutton Coldfield on June 29.

Sally, from Lichfield, said: “When I planned the fun day the dream was for Katie to be there but it will now be in her memory.

“We used to be neighbours and I will always remember the fun we had with impromptu get togethers and bbq’s with the kids.

“One of Katie’s favourite phrases was ‘amazeballs’ so that’s exactly what we want this event to be.

“We miss her terribly but we’re determined to go ahead and make it a fun day she would have been proud of.”

Tickets cost £2.50 per adult and £1 for children.
