Libraries promoting services for blind and partially-sighted visitors

Libraries in Lichfield and Burntwood are promoting the services they offer to blind and partially-sighted people.

The Make a Noise in Libraries Fortnight event runs from June 3 to 13 and now Staffordshire County Council want to remind local residents that the facilities are open for all.

County Councillor Mike Lawrence said: “This is a great opportunity for us to demonstrate that local libraries are there for the benefit of the whole community and to highlight the wide range of services on offer for Lichfield and Burntwood’s blind and partially sighted residents.

“Local libraries play a vital role in bringing communities together and putting people in touch with services that can help improve their lives.”

Among the services on offer for blind or partially-sighted visitors include:

  • A wide range of books in large print, audio books and a large music collection. Visually impaired visitors are not charged for borrowing or requesting books, audio or music.
  • For people who are registered blind or partially sighted, libraries can arrange a subscription to the audio books by post service from the Royal National Institute of the Blind.
  • The library can also direct you to books in Braille and Moon from the Royal National Institute for the Blind.
  • Libraries offer specialist Bookstart packs for blind and partially sighted babies and toddlers, known as Booktouch. These contain touch and feel books, advice leaflets about how to share books with blind and partially sighted children, a book guide and helpful services list, plus the Bookstart Rhymetimes CD.
  • Staffordshire’s library computers have software that can magnify text, read documents and webpages aloud and allow people to choose colour schemes that will meet individual sight requirements. Every library also has a large print keyboard.
