Lichfield town crier ready to ring the bell on the world stage

Hear ye, hear ye – Lichfield’s town crier is heading for an international competition.

Ken Knowles is travelling to Canada to take on 50 rivals for the World Invitational Town Crier Championships.

The competition will see him tested on a range of skills and is one of the few global contests on offer.

“Hosting an international town crying competition has become quite rare,” Ken explained. “World Championships can be expensive to host.

“The competition will last for four days and there is a packed programme of cries, personal appearances and guided tours of places of interest.

“There will be several rounds and each one has a theme, including the Home Town Cry which is an opportunity to tell the audience about where you are from.

“It has to be between 100 and 125 words long and it is quite a challenge to extol the attractions of Lichfield in so few words.”

Ken has become a well-known face at town crying events across the UK and he admits he’s looking forward to testing himself against the best from across the globe.

“During the last three years I have competed all over England in competitions with some excellent results,” he added. “It will be a new experience to test my skills against the best criers in the world.

“I’m excited by the whole project and I’m relishing the thought of making an impact and new friends.”

Only 50 criers have been invited to try their luck in Canada, with many of them – Ken included – having to fund their own trip.

“The last World Invitational Competition was held in Chester about four years ago and I was not accepted so I will be determined to make the most of this opportunity.

“The City Council, who employ me as Town Crier, have given their permission for me to compete so bring it on!”
