The Sport and Recreation Alliance’s Green Thinking Award was handed over to committee member Veronica Box by HRH The Earl of Wessex at a ceremony at St James’ Palace.

The club is currently part way through a four-phase process to introduce a range of environmentally-friendly changes.

Hammerwich has already replaced its inefficient boiler and white goods and is hoping to introduce a water recycling system and wind turbines.

“We are delighted to win this Green Thinking Award,” Veronica said. “We’ve come up with some pretty ambitious plans which we are still fundraising for, so the £1,000 prize money that comes with this award is a real bonus.

“Hammerwich Cricket Club started 60 years ago with a few friends and an old double decker bus as the changing rooms. It’s amazing to see how the club has grown and to know that, through the hard work of all the countless volunteers, we are on the cusp of making ourselves sustainable for years to come.”
