Emergency services team up to battle drink-driving in Lichfield

Firefighters and police officers will be joining forces in a bid to prevent drink-driving in Lichfield.

They will take to the city centre’s streets from 7pm to 11pm on Friday (July 19), to hand out wristbands which can be exchanged for a free or cut-price soft drink.

The initiative is part of the I’ll Be Des scheme which aims to make being the designated non-drinking driver a more attractive idea.

So far The Duke of York, The Pig and Truffle, The Acorn, The Crown, George IV, The Malt, The Gatehouse and Après have signed up to the scheme.

Lichfield firefighter Philip Mulligan, who will be leading the initiative, said: “Drink driving can have devastating consequences – not only on the culprit, but also on innocent bystanders who can be caught in the crossfire.

“As firefighters we see first-hand the terrible effects that drink driving can have and we are determined to stop it from happening.

“The I’ll Be Des campaign offers a great incentive for people to enjoy a soft drink rather than getting behind the wheel of a car and breaking the law – or worse.”
