Burntwood Town FC draw after second half comeback

A second half turnaround saw Burntwood Town FC secure a draw in their pre-season friendly with Newhall United.

Mike Gentles’ men had left themselves plenty to do after falling behind inside three minutes when their offside trap was breached.

Town’s blend of regulars and trialists were struggling to make an impact and were 2-0 down when Newhall – who play two steps above Burntwood in the non-league pyramid – again found the net.

And the writing looked to be on the wall before half-time when with just 30 minutes on the clock a quick counter-attack forced a corner which eventually found the net to make it 3-0.

Gentles made two changes at the break but his words clearly had an impact as Burntwood began to find their feet.

A defender’s slip allowed Jake West to slide the ball home and give Town a lifeline.

The goal gave Burntwood some much-needed confidence and they managed to cut the arrears to one goal on 55 minutes when a well-worked move resulted in Josh Haston’s through ball found Derek Powell, who held off two defenders before rounding the out-rushing keeper and slotting home.

It still looked as thought Town’s luck would be out though as a number of good chances came and went with the Newhall keeper in inspired form.

But on 70minutes they eventually found the equaliser when West was set free down the left and he cut inside before smashing ball beyond the keeper to score a brace on his debut.

Both sides had chances to win it as the game drew to a conclusion and it looked as though Newhall were going to nick the result after a penalty was given for handball with just two minutes remaining. However, Burntwood keeper Frogarty stood tall and managed tip the spot kick away.
