Hopes of a top six finish last time out were dashed after a drop in form at the end of the season saw the Brownsfield Park club finish the season in 10th.

But despite turning Lichfield’s fortunes around following the exit of Russell Dodd, Holt isn’t resting on his laurels – and with a full pre-season behind him, the City boss admits the buck will stop with him this term as they look to improve.

“This is our side now so I will stand or fall on our performances,” he said. “There can be no excuses that this isn’t our side because it is and we’ve got the players in that we wanted.

“We are a stronger unit than last season and a lot fitter and we’ve worked so hard in training.

“I can’t wait for us to get going.”

City have enjoyed a productive pre-season campaign, suffering only one defeat against Southern League side Banbury United.

They rounded their preparations off with a 2-0 triumph over Rostance Edwards which saw them showcasing their new style of passing football.

“We have stamped our authority on the style of play and we’ve had good feedback from the people that have seen us recently in the friendlies,” Holt added.

“But it’s so important that we carry our momentum into the season and get off to a good start because that will only breed confidence.”

Lichfield’s first game of the season is at home to Bolehall Swifts tomorrow (August 3), kick-off 3pm.
