Lichfield City FC twice threw away a lead as they were beaten on the opening day of the season.

Paul Holt’s men had been hoping to get off to a flying start against Bolehall Swifts in the Midland Combination Premier Division after an impressive pre-season campaign.

And things look good as they controlled the play in the opening exchanges and were rewarded when skipper Todd Perry headed home a David Leese corner after 18 minutes.

It should have been 2-0 when Kyle Minto found himself one-on-one with the Bolehall keeper, but the City striker rushed his effort and sent the ball wide.

The let-off seemed to spur the visitors on and home keeper Ryan Moore did well to keep out Carpenter as Lichfield maintained their one goal advantage going into the break.

But City were slow out of the blocks in the second half and were made to pay when Scott Goodby had time to place a header from 15 yards into the bottom corner.

Lichfield, to their credit, battled back well, but woeful finishing from Minto and strike partner Olly Budd meant the score stayed level.

But Budd made up for his earlier hesitancy when he shrugged off the attentions of two Bolehall defenders to fire past Maguire and put City back in front on 65 minutes.

Lichfield looked to have taken a grip on the game, only to see a needless challenge in the box by debutant Leese give Swifts a lifeline, substitute David Yonwin putting away the penalty.

And things went from bad to worse when Yonwin found himself clear of a static home defence and he clinically slotted past Moore on 77 minutes.

City huffed and puffed in the final frantic minutes but never created any chances of note as they slumped to a disappointing defeat.
