Nick Wellecomme celebrated his 50th Chasetown appearance in style by grabbing the winner for Craig Harris’ men against Brigg Town.
The Scholars won it 1-0 to claim their first opening day victory in four years.
However, it could have been a different result on the day, as Brigg had a goal disallowed.
Jordan Thewliss thought he’d netted the Zebras first ever goal against Chasetown, but the linesman’s flag cut Brigg’s celebrations short.
Craig Harris’ men got stronger as the half wore on with only some last ditch defending by Oliver Fisher denying Theo Robinson the opener.
The visitors keeper Robert Zand was in brilliant form to deny Wellcomme’s crisp shot from the near post.
But Chasetown’s record scorer from last season had the last laugh, just before half-time. Wellcomme raced onto the end of a ricochet from midfield and reached the ball before Zand to divert the ball into an empty net.
Brigg hit back after half-time with Scott Matthews testing Ryan Price from range.
However, the Zebras soon found themselves exposed at the back, as Wellecomme nipped in and rounded the keeper. But he saw his near post shot come back off the frame of the goal from a tight angle.
Returnee winger, Ramone Stephens almost made the game safe, but his curling shot was clawed away by Zand.
Few would have begruded Brigg an equaliser but Price stood firm, as Chasetown held on to take the points.
