Lichfield RUFC’s development side secure Sutton 2nds victory

Lichfield RUFC’s development squad faced another step up in class of opposition when they travelled to take on Sutton Coldfield 2nds.

The home team were well drilled and well organised, but a display of skill, lots of tenacity and some great defence allowed the Lichfield team to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Playing with the strong wind in the first half, the Myrtle Greens exerted a lot of early pressure without managing to score and things looked a little ominous when Sutton created a clear scoring opportunity with their first real attack and their No 8 eventually went over for a try in the corner.

However, Lichfield weren’t daunted and saw a good spell of pressure tell when some good work by Olly Savage allowed Chris Upton to dive over. Tim Lloyd added the conversion.

The score gave the visitors confidence and just a few minutes later they repelled another Sutton break. Dan Skidmore won a good turnover and the ball passed through a few pairs of hands before Ryan Doolan outpaced the remaining defence to score under the posts. Lloyd again added the conversion.

Sutton now knew they were in a real game and they came back to create a clear overlap for the right winger to run in, to send his side in 14-10 down.

A strong second half defensive showing saw Lichfield thwart a number of attacks, with crucial tackles made time and time again. Even the young colt Taylor Foxall – playing in the second row – showed incredible maturity as he made countless steals in the contact situation and always managed to make ground when in possession.
