Lichfield RUFC development side beaten in first leg of quarter final

Lichfield RUFC’s development team were beaten in the first leg of their league cup quarter final after a below par display.

Early pressure from the Greens produced only a couple of penalty chances, neither of which were taken and it was Walsall who scored first from their first visit to the 22.

The home team fly half scored and converted a try to give them a 7-0 lead.

But Lichfield came back and a flowing move ended with Jack Fielding crashing through the last defender to score the try. David Lote found his kicking form to convert well from wide out.

They then spurned a couple of other promising chances before Walsall began to use the slope and the elements to exert more pressure on the  line. This resulted in two simple penalties that enabled the hosts to regain the lead.

With the half coming to an end, the Walsall No 8 broke through one tackle before offloading to his supporting flanker to score under the posts. The successful conversion meant Lichfield turned around with a 20-7 deficit to overcome.

Things looked promising when Luke Taplin pulled a try back after 46 minutes. Jack Fielding successfully took over the kicking duties as David Lote had departed after picking up a nasty looking knee injury, and at 20-14 it was definitely game on.

But Lichfield could never really exert any consistent pressure and it was Walsall who scored next to extend their lead once more.

Jack Fielding did finally manage to cross again for Lichfield to pull it back within one score with seven minutes remaining.

Real chances to level were few and far between and it was Walsall who finished the game on the attack.

Lichfield will host the second leg on  December 7 with a six point gap to recover in order to make it through to the semi-final.
