For the second consecutive Saturday, Chasetown FC had the lion’s share of the play, the better chances and dominated the game, but were unable to come away with all three points.

A late goal for the Lincolnshire side – Brigg’s first goal against The Scholars in six attempts – gave the Zebras their first ever point against Chasetown, after five previous defeats.

Craig Harris’ men were on the front foot from the kick off and in the opening minutes, Joe Halsall tested Jake Turner with a header.

Dean Bennett then sent over a corner that was headed clear by defender Paul Ashton, despite Chasetown’s protests that the ball had crossed the line.

It seemed only a matter of time before The Scholars took the lead and the best move of the half saw Danny Bragoli’s pass flicked on by Nick Wellecomme into the path of Ramone Stephens, who fired a first time shot a whisker wide.

The breakthrough came just after the half-hour, when Wellecomme slipped a neat pass to the unmarked Simon Brown who rifled into the roof of the net to secure his third goal in a week.

The chances kept coming and Turner saved a Wellecomme header, before defender Scott Hellewell threw himself in front of another Wellecomme shot to keep the scoreline 1-0 at the break.

Two minutes after the restart, Stephens had a left foot shot blocked by Turner, his follow up strike with his right was cleared for a corner and then Bennett’s corner was headed against the bar by Tesfa Robinson as Chasetown still searched for that elusive second goal.

Brigg had created next to nothing and in the 68th minute came the first real scare for the visitors when the hosts appealed for a spot kick after the ball bounced up and struck the arm of a Scholars defender in a crowded goalmouth.

Hellewell blocked Wellecomme for a second time with the Scholars Number 9 having done everything except score a goal in this match.

But with four minutes remaining, Brigg got their one and only chance of the game and substitute Philip Jackman found space to net a goal completely against the run of play.

In the dying seconds, Wellecomme headed inches wide of the upright as Chasetown were forced to settle for a share of the points.
