Lichfield RUFC made to dig deep as unbeaten league run goes on

Lichfield RUFC kept up their triumphant start to the season but were made to work hard at basement side Market Bosworth.

The hosts played well beyond their league position and while the visitors were able to cope with the direct threat, the Greens were the makers of their own demise with ball in hand as wrong options and poor execution allowed the home side to get on the scoreboard first with a well-struck penalty.

When Lichfield were able to retain the ball, they shifted the point of contact wide and a break by Paul Maxwell-Keys saw a well placed grubber gathered by Greg Massey to score in the corner.

It took the Greens a further 15 minutes to really get into the game and piece together some phases of attack. With every period of sustained pressure, there was an error that allowed Bosworth to relieve it. On the one occasion they were allowed to play, neat hands down the blind side saw Nick Southern gallop away from the defense and score in the corner.

Lichfield tried to force the game at times and an attempted run instead of kick saw them penalised at the breakdown. Another excellent kick saw Bosworth register three more points.

Stern words were shared at half-time as the visitors looked to improve on the 10-6 lead. But their usual polished performance deserted them again as Bosworth scored once more.

But with the home side kicking at every opportunity, the Greens rallied and upped the intensity. The ball was moved from one side of the pitch to the other, and Josh Massey finished well in the corner. He was able to convert his own try, and Lichfield were back in front.

It took another ten minutes for the trick to be repeated, as Bosworth couldn’t live with the speed of the visitors’ play.

A series of controversial decisions and yellow cards saw the home side regain the momentum, only to meet with resolute defending by Lichfield. But the pressure eventually told as Bosworth drove over the line to finish the game 20-24.
