Essignton trip fails to bring festive cheer for Whittington RFC

Whittington RFC go into the festive break hoping for a better second half of the season as they came away from Essignton with no reward.

The hosts came into the game on the back of two wins after only claiming a losing bonus point before those victories.

Whittington, meanwhile, were looking for their second victory of the season but had to put out a slightly youthful and inexperienced side due to some key players being unavailable.

With strengthening winds it was never going to be a kickers day and the visitors were defending from the outset.

Essington were first on the scoresheet but it took 16 minutes for the first try as Whittington dug deep with their defensive play.

By the half-hour mark the home side got over the try line again and just before the break they claimed a third try to make the score 17-0.

Whittington had their moments and felt aggrieved when Tom Jameson looked to have got a try for the men in blue and white only for the referee to disallow it.

The second half saw Essington carry on from the first half and within a couple of minutes they picked up the try bonus point.

Whittington started to put some good plays together as the side started to gel, but the home side were on a roll and with the clock ticking down on the final league fixture of the year Essington dived over for further tries to make the final score 39-0.

Whittington are back in league action on January 18 when they travel to league leaders Rugeley.

The club are still looking for new recruits during the season. Anyone interested in taking up rugby can contact Martin Hughes on 07854 129312.
