Chasetown travelled to Stocksbridge Park Steels and came away with their first ever league point from an encounter between the two sides.

An even contest saw both sides create chances, but the two goalkeepers and the frame of the goal kept the score goalless.

The Scholars started brightly and skipper Chris Slater advanced and had a shot blocked by a defender before Nathan Waite fired the rebound straight at the keeper Liam Flynn.

Chasetown had an early penalty appeal turned down when Steels defender Stephen Hoyle appeared to scoop the ball away with his hand when he fell in the area.

Stocksbridge forced John Bateman into two comfortable saves as both sides created openings in an entertaining first 20 minutes.

A Danny Edwards corner saw Nick Wellecomme flick a header narrowly over the bar before another couple of Edwards’ in-swingers had Flynn scrambling to punch the ball clear.

Flynn made a fingertip save to deny Chasetown’s Richard Davies while Chase keeper Bateman twice kept out Lee Garside, one with a strong kick away and the other bravely at the striker’s feet.

Although the visitors had good second half possession it was the home side that went closest to the winner. Firstly, Kler Heh struck the post in the early action of the second half, then late on substitute Rory Coleman hit the top of the Chasetown crossbar.

In the dying seconds, Chase substitute Danny Griffiths fashioned out a chance for himself, creating the chance for himself and skidding a shot no more than two feet wide of Flynn’s right hand post.

Chasetown: Bateman, Johnson, Beckett, Slater, Miles, Downes, Davies, Parsons, Wellecomme (Danks, 87 mins), Waite (Griffiths, 69 mins), Edwards (Brown, 69 mins). Subs not used: Charlton, McDonald.
