An estate agent has been forced to pay more than £4,000 after failing to tidy litter from its land.
On February 11, Weingreen Limited did not enter a plea at Staffordshire Magistrates’ Court but were found guilty after the court heard that there had been a number of complaints over waste in the back car park of the shops and flats on Main Street in Stonnall.
Lichfield District Council had issued a Litter Clearing Notice to the London-based company which required them to inspect the land every month and remove any litter.
But when they failed to comply with the notice, a £100 Fixed Penalty Notice was issued – which Weingreen Limited did not pay.
As a result, the business has now been fined £2,500, ordered to pay court costs of £1,278, a further £448 compensation, and a £120 victim surcharge – a total of £4,346.
Councillor Colin Greatorex, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Community, Housing & Health, said: “After a lengthy investigation, we are pleased this case has been successfully resolved.
“It’s our role to make sure companies fulfill their responsibility towards the environment and local communities, and this prosecution shows how important it is that businesses comply with environmental standards.”
