Chasetown FC won their ‘must win’ bottom six clash with Market Drayton to make a stride away from the division’s drop zone – as new manager Marcus Law won his first league game in charge of The Scholars.

The visitors opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Paul Sullivan battled past a defender, who was pulling his shirt, and looked up to chip up a perfect cross to the far post where Jon Haynes headed home unmarked.

Chasetown doubled their lead in the 20th minute when Nicky Turton seized on a pass from midfield and curled the ball beyond goalkeeper Danny Read into the roof of the net.

Sullivan almost made it three when Read was stranded off his line after attempting a clearance but Sullivan’s long range effort towards the unguarded net only found the top of the netting over the cross bar.

Market Drayton reduced the arrears when Chase keeper John Bateman punched clear in a goalmouth scramble but was powerless to stop home skipper James Askey from netting.

Richard Davies was a whisker away from extending Chasetown’s lead with a low shot which beat Read but clipped the outside of the post and rippled the side-netting.

The second half was anything but a classic with the hosts perhaps having the lion’s share of the possession restricting Chasetown to a defensive role rather than trying to add to their lead.

However, the best chance of the second period did finally fall to Law’s men. Substitute Joshua Smith curled in a beautiful cross which Sullivan diverted goalwards with a deft headed that beat Read but also was an inch or two wide of the post.

Chasetown: Bateman, Butler, Beckett, Slater, Francis, Parsons, Brown (Griffiths, 84 mins), Davies, Turton (Waite, 85 mins), Sullivan, Haynes (Smith, 63 mins). Subs not used: Edwards, Pond.
