Former Leicester Tigers player Gerard Mullen has been named as the new head coach of Lichfield RUFC.

He will be joined by new director of rugby Derrick Squire, Ed Slater as forwards coach and Damian Mooney as assistant coach.

The arrivals follow the departure of director of rugby Dave Bassett and head coach Alex Gray.

A spokesman for the club said: “Gerard has p[revious experience in National Three London and South East, as well as extensive experience in the university game.

“More recently he coached Loughborough University – a role he will continue alongside his Lichfield duties during the coming season.”

As well as stints at Leicester as a player, he also appeared for Esher, London Scottish and London Welsh.

Forwards coach Slater is a current professional with Leicester Tigers, who trains with the England World Cup squad and played recently for his country against the Barbarians.

A Lichfield spokesman added: “Ed will bring excellent technical and tactical knowledge and he will join up with the club when his England commitments end.

“We wish Ed every success with training and selection over the coming months and look forward to working with him at Lichfield.”
