Lichfield’s MP has joined hundreds of local residents to take on a summer reading challenge at the city’s library.

Michael Fabricant pledged to encourage others to read with children, while younger visitors pledged to read more over the summer.

He said: “The summer reading challenge is all about getting young people to read and also to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for the most pledges received for any reading campaign.

“It was great to see so many young people in Lichfield Library and I am told queues were building up at 9am when the library opened on Saturday morning.

“There is no alternative to reading. It’s important for a child’s future, but, in any event, your mind’s eye is always brighter than any TV, computer, or cinema screen.”
