Councillors were told it would be “irresponsible” to omit the environment from the title of a Cabinet member.
Plans were drawn up to give Lichfield District Council’s deputy leader Ian Pritchard’s role the responsibility for economic growth and development.
But environment was added to the title after concerns were raised by Conservative councillor Margaret Stanhope at a recent meeting of the authority.
“The omission of environment from the proposed title is a sad reflection on this council,” she said.
“I suspect every member is questioned on the issue regularly. It is a highly controversial issue and we have to recognise that.
“We hear about it daily and it would be irresponsible to remove it.”
Her views were supported by Tory colleague Cllr Richard Cox.
He said: “Environment is key to many of the things we do.”
After hearing concerns from other members of the council, Cllr Pritchard agreed to the addition of environment in the portfolio title.
“I can sense the concern and it’s not worth fighting over a word,” he said.
