Odane Barnes scores twice as Lichfield City FC draw first league game

Striker Odane Barnes stepped off the bench to net twice and earn a point for Lichfield City FC on the first day of the season.

Gary Birch’s men started well against Atherstone, with Ricardo Richards firing at goal from distance before pulling up with a groin strain.

Barnes replaced him and almost made an immediate impact with an effort just over the bar.

Lichfield continued to press with Tony Clarke hitting the woodword before Barnes broke the deadlock.

The goal stirred Atherstone into action and they struck the crossbar.

The scores were level with 40 minutes on the clock when Ryan Ball found the net.

But Barnes struck five minutes after the restart when he produced a fine finish from 20 yards.

Lichfield’s hard work was undone once more when a handball decision gave Atherstone a penalty which Simeon Smith tucked home.

The visitors had chances to complete the turnaround, while Clarke went close for City.

Barnes almost stole all three points and the matchball when he saw a late effort come back off the bar.

Lichfield return to action tomorrow (August 11) with a home game against Heather St Johns, who won their opening league fixture against Pelsall Villa 3-2. Kick-off is at 7.45pm.
