But the disappointment of not seeing the spot kick given clearly stirred the striker as he levelled with a sweet strike from distance in the second half.
Clarke missed a good chance to put his side in front as Lichfield took control of the action.
As the clock ticked down, City had more chances to get their noses in front, but they were made to rue those misses when Josh O’Grady scored the winner for Coventry five minutes from time.
Lichfield will look to bounce straight back tomorrow night (August 18) when they make the short trip to Heath Hayes.
