The Scholars had a great chance to break the deadlock after 14 minutes when Lee Butler broke from midfield and drilled a shot that Conor Mitchell could only parry.

But within a minute the visitors took the lead when Stuart Hadlam’s effort was saved by John Bateman and Conor Glavin slotted the rebound into an empty net.

Sheffield doubled their lead midway through the half when Chasetown’s defence were caught out by the pace of Shaq McKenzie who fired the ball across Bateman into the far corner.

Mitchell kicked away a James Dance effort after the Scholars’ best move of the game as the hosts tried to force a way back into the game.

But five minutes before the interval Sheffield extended their lead when Benny Igiehon saw his spot kick saved by Bateman but followed the rebound into an empty net.

Igiehon hit the post in the first minute of the second before Chasetown were awarded a penalty for a foul on Paul Sullivan. Simon Brown’s spot kick was saved by Mitchell who then acrobatically kept out the rebound off defender Ben Turner to prevent an own goal.

The Scholars were a player light when Danny Edwards limped out the action after all three substitutions were made and the ten men reduced the deficit when Sullivan fired into the roof of the net after a through ball from midfield.

Chasetown: Bateman, Thompson, Edwards, Slater, Francis (Haynes, HT), Brown (Gould, 58 mins), Dance, Davies, Waite, Sullivan, Butler (Rankin, 51 mins). Subs not used: Wint, Hayden.
