Lichfield were forced to ride their luck in the opening stages when James Hicks fired over after springing the City offside trap.

But an even first half swung the home side’s way when a handball in the area gave Gary Birch’s men the chance to break the deadlock.

Clarke – who has enjoyed a goalscoring start to life at Lichfield – made no mistake from 12 yards.

Odane Barnes could have made it even better for City before the break but saw his effort go just wide.

Clarke almost had a second with a header which was just off target, but when Tom Evans was bundled over in the box, the Lichfield goalscorer made no mistake with his second spot kick of the day.

It was 3-0 to Lichfield with 67 minutes on the clock when Andre Francis’ header was palmed away by the Leicester Road keeper – only for the ball to ricochet off a defender and into the net.

Sub Kyle Minto had chances to extend the lead but was off target.

It looked as though Lichfield were cruising to victory when Amaur Sandiyv fired an unstoppable effort into the net from distance to reduce the deficit.

The nerves started to jangle for Lichfield late on when keeper Sheredan Martinez left a long range effort from Sandiyv thinking it was going wide – only to see the ball nestle into the bottom corner.

But City held on to claim all three points and move themselves into fourth in the table.

They return to action tomorrow (August 25) with a trip to Hinckley.
