Low Carbon Lichfield is hoping to add the energy system to the Lichfield Almshouses.

Their hopes have been boosted after they were shortlisted for funding from the M&S Energy funding scheme.

The installation of the solar panels could move a step closer if they win enough public votes.

A spokesperson said: “The Almshouses have been a community haven since 1654 when William Lunne gave two houses as almshouses for six poor widows.

“Now home to 13 vulnerable poor, but thoroughly decent people for whom we, the volunteers at community group Low Carbon Lichfield, would like to provide power via Solar PV power.”

The system would allow the organisation to show residents how they are using the power and educate them on how to make energy efficient savings.

Low Carbon Lichfield say they hope the project will spark similar schemes elsewhere in the country.

“It will be a pioneer project for the city and as such can be an inspiration and a practical example for local government, social housing providers and charities,” the spokesperson added.
