Conservatives on Lichfield District Council voted against joining the West Midlands link-up earlier this week.

Cllr Marion Bland – the sole Lib Dem representative on the local authority – abstained from the ballot.

The party’s local spokesman Paul Ray said that while his party backed the principle, a greater understanding of the implications of any link-up.

“The vote was in response to an initial invitation to join and at this stage we want to receive more detail so we can make an informed decision,” he said. “We look forward to receiving that in due course and as Liberal Democrats we strongly believe that devolved government leads to better government.”
