People, including leading political figures, have been texting their thoughts and personal stories on why the service and sacrifice of members of the Armed Forces should be remembered.

A phone with the messages on and a charger have been buried in an airtight capsule in Heroes’ Square in the shadow of the new £15.7million Remembrance Centre.

A spokesperson said: “An engraved pavior in Heroes’ Square – a beautiful outdoor area that is being created just outside the new Remembrance Centre – will mark its position.

“It features the inscription ‘Why do we remember, The Nation’s Thoughts’ along with the date the capsule is to be opened – September 2116.”

The new centre is due to open in October.
