The Liberal Democrats are urging people in Lichfield and Burntwood to have their say on the impact of Brexit.

The party is launching a national consultation on the issue in a bid to highlight areas where the Government must ensure a smooth departure from the European Union.

Cllr Paul Ray will be responsible for seeking local views and says he hopes to hear from a broad spectrum of organisations.

“We in the Liberal Democrats were active campaigners for Remain, but the people have spoken and we totally respect the referendum decision,” he said. “Our focus now is to ensure that we Brexit in a way that is best for the UK, our economy and our young generation.

“The negotiations with the EU must be pragmatic and sensible and not driven by any dogmatic political stance. This Tory Brexit Government has not got to grips with the multitude of difficulties that leaving the EU presents. While the Government flounders, I will be talking to people in Lichfield and Burntwood to understand their concerns.

“Every sector of society will be affected by Brexit. I want to hear from businesses, service providers and local people in Lichfield and Burntwood about how it will impact on jobs, investment and our daily lives.”

Although the Liberal Democrats are no longer part of a coalition government following the Conservative victory at the last General Election, Cllr Ray believes the party still has a role to play on holding the Tories to account.

He said: “Liberal Democrats will challenge the Government at every opportunity to hold them to account for the real damage a poor Brexit deal will do to individuals right across the country and here in Lichfield and Burntwood. Together we will fight to keep Britain open, tolerant and united.

“We are carrying out online surveys through our local Liberal Democrat website and Facebook page and I urge residents, businesses and other organisations in Lichfield and Burntwood to get online and take part as we really do want to collect as many views as possible.”

The only concern leave voters may have is that liberal/left institutions like the BBC are desperately trying to undermine a democratically authorised mandate. What business this has to do with the liberal democrats isn’t clear.
