Funeral of sexual violence campaigner Jill Saward to take place at Lichfield Cathedral

The funeral of a leading sexual violence campaigner will be held at Lichfield Cathedral.

Jill Saward was the first victim in the UK to waive her right to anonymity after she was raped during a break-in at her father’s vicarage in 1986.

She died following a stroke aged 51 earlier this month.

Her funeral will take place in Lichfield at midday tomorrow (January 17).

Jill was married to Gavin Drake, the former director of communications for the Diocese of Lichfield. The couple had three sons together.

Julie Jones, chief executive for the Diocese, said: “Jill was a remarkable woman who fought so hard for victims of sexual violence. She will be remembered as a warrior for forgiveness.

“She was someone who turned her own suffering into a force for good, speaking up for the voiceless.

“Jill will be greatly missed by all of those who knew her. Our sympathies and prayers are with Gavin and their family at this tragic time.”
