Burntwood RUFC get the better of Tamworth in friendly encounter

Burntwood RUFC welcomed Tamworth to The Sportsway for a fixture which was designated as a friendly but was still full of commitment by both sides.

The hosts opened the scoring after eight minutes. A penalty kicked to the right corner led to a close range line out. Possession was lost but the clearance kick led to another line out on the 22 which was won.

Winger Dan Garrity chipped over the forwards and when the Tamworth defender fumbled the ball Garrity was there to touch down in the corner.

Burntwood went close to increasing their lead on 12 minutes with a burst from Luke Rookyard but the next score didn’t arrive until 25 minutes.

A patient build up saw the forwards set up a close range maul from which scrum half Rob Jones darted through as the maul splintered.

Sean Latham’s side were good value for their half time lead but other promising opportunities to score were lost due to errors in the worsening pitch conditions.

Play in the third quarter was confined to midfield until Burntwood were able to advance with the award of two penalties. Both were kicked for ground down the left touchline.

With line out possession secured close to the visitors’ try line, Adam Black rolled off the maul to touch down on 60 minutes for his second try in two matches.

Then it was Tamworth’s turn to benefit from penalty awards which saw their forwards maul over the home line only to be held up after 76 minutes.

Moving into time added on the visitors finally gained some reward. They tapped a penalty inside the home 22 and kept the ball alive well through the forwards to score to the right of the posts. The successful conversion brought proceedings to a close.

Burntwood sent a youthful 3rd XV to face Bloxwich 2nds and they returned with a welcome 43-12 win.

This Saturday Burntwood return to league action with an away trip to Clee Hill. The 2nd XV host Newcastle 2nds.

On Friday January 27 the club hosts a Burns Night celebration. Tickets available at the clubhouse.
