Cllr Paul Ray, Lib Dem councillor for Chadsmead ward, said Lichfield District Council’s proactive approach was a welcome one.

“I’d like to applaud the council’s initiatives and the good work being done by Susan Bamford who leads on this initiative for the council,” he said.

“The council is working to raise awareness so that we can all recognise the signs of child sexual exploitation and other abuse. This includes training for our night time economy staff including taxi drivers and accommodation providers.”

A number of high profile cases nationally have led to calls for more action to be taken.

Cllr Ray added: “A key issue related to safeguarding is the education of our community, and in particular parents and youngsters about online abuse and grooming.

“People may have heard about the tragic story of Kayleigh Haywood who was groomed online and then murdered. With the support of Kayleigh’s family, Leicestershire Police has made a great film about aspects of the last two weeks of her life and the warning signs.

“I’d urge everyone to take five minutes and encourage parents in Lichfield and Burntwood to get their children to view this film.”
