Chasetown FC suffered a night to forget as they went down 4-1 at Basford United in the league cup.

The Scholars almost made the dream start as a fortuitous touch off Ryan Wynter on the edge of the area span up over goalkeeper Jake Wood and off the crossbar.

But things started to go wrong as Chasetown lost goalkeeper Curtis Pond due to a rib injury in a collision with his own player.

Basford then capitalised on striker Mitch Piggon going in goal by taking the lead in the 45th minute through Fabian Smith.

Deep into first half injury time Jack Langston levelled with a pile driver free kick from the edge of the box.

Piggon made a stunning save to deny Kieran Wells, but then the Basford gave the hosts the lead with a looping header over Piggon.

Just after the half hour the lead was extended after a good passing movement and Callum Smith fired beyond the grasp of Piggon.

Chasetown were reduced to ten men with Mike Williams sent off for two bookable offences as their night went from bad to worse.

In the 90th minute Wells added his second and his side’s fourth with a cool finish with the visiting defence exposed.
