Lichfield City FC upset the odds to see off title-chasing Leicester Road

Lichfield City FC threw the form book out of the window to end a run of five games without a win.

Despite seeing their hopes of being involved in the title mix fade, Dave Langston’s men had a potentially huge say in where the Midland Football League Division One championship will go after beating second-placed Leicester Road.

The high-flying visitors started the brighter of the two sides, although neither they nor Lichfield were able to carve out any clear-cut chances in the first half.

City showed they were a threat in the second period though as Josh Haston struggled to get his shot away from close range.

But the breakthrough eventually came when Joe Clarke’s header found its way past the Leicester Road keeper.

It was almost 2-0 when a mix-up at the back saw a visiting defender send the ball narrowly wide of his own post.

Leicester Road did see a late chance skip over the bar, but Lichfield held on to claim a welcome three points.
