Lichfield company’s chairman who designed cutlery for Concorde has died

The chairman of a Lichfield business who personally designed cutlery for Concorde has died.

John Price OBE, who was the third generation of the family-owned Arthur Price business, died late last month aged 88.

Born in Birmingham in December 1928 he saw active service in Greece with the Durham Light Infantry in 1947 before joining the company two years lter.

He became managing director in 1959 and became chairman in 1974 when is father stepped down.

In 1977 he designed the cutlery for the supersonic Concorde aircraft – the same year the company was granted the Royal Warrant.

His eldest son Simon, chief executive of the family-firm, said: “He led a crusade most of his life for the cutlery industry and when he set his mind to something he did his best to achieve it.

“Words people have used to describe him include gracious, gentleman, inspirational, lovely and loyal friend. He was a great grandpa and very proud of his grandchildren.”

John’s funeral will take place at St Giles Church in Whittington on May 17 at 2.30pm.
