Police give all clear after Lichfield Cathedral evacuation

Police say nothing was found after Lichfield Cathedral was evacuated.

Officers searched the building after being called to reports of a man acting suspiciously a at around lunchtime.

But a Staffordshire Police spokesperson said nothing had been found following an afternoon of searches: “We were called after a member of the public had concerns about the behaviour of a visitor to the site.

“She quite rightly reported those concerns to the site management and the police, which resulted in a detailed search of the site by police. We deployed specialist search trained officers, supported by our trained police dogs trained to detect explosives. This detailed search confirmed that there was nothing of concern at the location.

“We want to remind our communities that the current threat level is severe, which means an attack is highly likely, and people should always report any concerns to the police so we can assess the information and put in place the most appropriate response.

“We want to thank those affected by the cordon and search in the area for their great cooperation this afternoon, and we urge the community to remain calm but vigilant.”
