Entries are being accepted for the 2017 Burntwood in Bloom competition.

Local gardeners are being urged to show off their horticultural skills across ten categories, including best front garden, best hanging basket and best community project.

The competition is run by Burntwood Town Council, with schools and businesses also invited to enter alongside residents.

Mary Danby, chief executive of Burntwood Town Council, said: “We have a lot of beautiful gardens in Burntwood and we’re looking for local people to enter the competition so they can get recognition for their hard work.

“We run Burntwood in Bloom each year as we want to encourage more people to get outdoors and into their gardens as it not only makes the local environment attractive, it’s really good for health and wellbeing.”

The deadline for applications is June 30. To download an entry form visit www.burntwood-tc.gov.uk or collect one from the council offices at the Old Mining College Centre.

For those who care, Burntwood in Bloom uses £4,150(budgeted) of taxpayer money.

I can’t be totally sure, as little info is given, but judges are paid? Or if not, the judges are selected by a single councillors, so her/his friends get on.

Also, the turnout for this has been pretty low. Burntwood, a population of around 26,000~ people. Paired with a £4000 ‘competition’ that attracts 10-20 people.

For those who are interested in the workings of Bwood in Bloom, you can contact town council CEO or the head of the event Councillor Tranter.

This is 1 of Bwood’s big events- Wakes, Xmas/Easter, Bwood Bloom and Play in Parks.

A very slim selection given to all the folks of Bwood. Wakes is great. Xmas can be fun. But Bwood Bloom and PlayinParks have a very selective audience. Needless to say, £4000 is alot of money for a tiny event…..
