The leader of Burntwood Town Council has defended her suggestion that a gallery of photographs of former chairman of the authority should be created.
The controversial idea drew criticism from former chairman Steve Norman, who accused Cllr Norma Bacon of “missing the regalia she is used to” in her roles on Lichfield City Council.
But Cllr Bacon said her idea was quite common at other councils.
She told LichfieldLive: “I proposed we had a gallery for present and ex-chairmen of Burntwood Town Council, in recognition of the work they did for the council and also the history of our town.
“I have visited many councils in my 22 years as a councillor, and many have these photo galleries.”
Thankfully, this proposal was rejected at last night’s BTC meeting. I suggested that Cllr Bacon should listen to her electors ( tho, as someone reminded me, she didn’t have any). Now, she appears not even to be listening to her fellow councillors, Labour and Tory.
At the meeting, Cllr Bacon referred constantly to what “we” do at Lichfield City Council compared with what “you” do at BTC so I also had to remind her that Burntwood is NOT Lichfield. What next? A Sheriff? Ermine? Tri-corn hats?
We are Burntwood and proud of our town. We don’t need this sort of frippery.
That is good news. I suggest that the Tories on BTC revolt against their leader and unseat her or maybe she would prefer to be de-frocked as that may be more in keeping with her ‘traditional’ views.
Good grief Baconator, when you’ve got people using food banks and a shocking lack of social housing, photos of councillors is hardly a priority.
Out of touch much? In a world where people are using foodbanks, Commandant Normski wants a shrine to previous civic chiefs. Says all you need to know about this woman and how completely out of touch with real people she is.
The excuse of ‘other people do it so we should’ doesn’t wash I’m afraid. Other places still stone people to death and jail gay people; doesn’t mean it’s a good thing.
The sooner councils ditch this old world fancy hats and chains mentality the sooner they’ll represent the people in a right and proper way. Bacon wouldn’t know where to start on that front.
Her blue buddies should realise this and think about whether they want their re-election resting on the shoulders of this woman in a few years time. Back Bacon? I’d rather slap myself with a steak.
Excellent news and a victory for common sense. The fact it was voted out shows there are at least some on the Town Council that are listening to the concerns of local residents it is however in need of more people willing to speak out against the growing list of vanity projects. I’m not sure that her husband Mr Bacon would do any more than help her with these expensive follies.
I shall wait with eager anticipation to see what she will suggest next. I’m expecting no less than a sedan chair so she can be carried over the potholes of the realm.
The Shah of Persia was forced to abdicate and take refuge in another country due to his excesses – Cllr Bacon your plane is on the runway, don’t forget your passport!
@Tony Don’t giver her ideas. The next meeting, will include a report on the benefits of a private jet.
Well done Sue and whoever voted against this stupidity.
FANTASTIC RESULT! but it should never have even been suggested. Now time for BTC to put Burntwood and the people of Burntwood first Lets make Burntwood Great get on with the business BTC and make us shine
Wouldn’t it be great if we had full voting records? We could thank those councillors who voted against this proposal for not wasting our money.
Voting should be a matter of public record. Our representatives should fear nothing in proving their value.
