Tom Green double sends Lichfield City FC through in the cup

Two goals from Tom Green were enough to send Lichfield City FC through in the Polymac Packaging League Cup.

Dave Langston’s men saw off the challenge of Long Eaton to set up a clash with Rocester in the next round.

The visitors started the brighter of the two sides but failed to test City keeper Jon Clough.

Jack Elcock had Lichfield’s first effort but his effort was easily kept out.

City striker Green had the best chance to break the deadlock but saw his downward header bounce up and clip the crossbar before going out of play.

Green was clearly in the mood and sent a powerful drive straight at the Long Eaton keeper – a trick repeated by Jordan Evans shortly afterwards.

But Lichfield almost went behind just before the break, with keeper Clough saving well after a breakaway attack.

His save looked all the better in the second half when City got their noses in front, Green finding the net with the help of a big deflection.

Long Eaton still posed a threat and saw an effort hit the side netting as they pegged Lichfield back in their own box.

But when City did ease the pressure they took full advantage as Connor Ryan did well to keep the ball in play to create the chance for Green to tap home.

The pressure was fully eased later in the game as Long Eaton were reduced to ten men allowing Lichfield to see out the tie and book their place in the next round.
