Shoppers in Lichfield and Burntwood warned after fake mobile phone handsets are seized

People in Lichfield and Burntwood are being warned about buying mobile phones after hundreds of fake handsets were seized.

Staffordshire trading standards officials seized the items after a tip off.

The Nokia 3310 phones are an updated model of the classic handset and usually sell for around £60 –
but the counterfeit versions ore being sold for less than £15.

Trading standards say the “shoddy” phones are poor imitations, but warn the chargers could be a potential fire risk.

Staffordshire County Council’s communities leader Gill Heath said: “The Nokia 3310 is by no means the only counterfeit phone being sold in the UK with fake iPhones being another common example.

“Following the seizures in Staffordshire we just want to raise awareness of this type of counterfeit product and the serious public health risk it presents. The chargers on these phones have been tested and found to be dangerous.

We’d ask people to ensure they’re buying from reputable retailers and check some of the tell-tale signs of fake phones.”
