Lichfield City FC through in the JW Hunt Cup after rollercoaster clash with Old Wulfrunians

Lichfield City FC won a thrilling JW Hunt Cup tie against Old Wulfrunians on penalties.

Dave Langston’s men got off to a bright start with Daniel Griffiths just struggling to make contact with an early cross into the box.

Strike partner Ben Lund was also in menacing mood, forcing a number of saves out of the Old Wulfrunians keeper.

But Lichfield were not having things their own way and they found themselves behind on the stroke of half-time as keeper Jon Clough was beaten by an effort from the edge of the box.

The second half saw City come out on the front foot, but the sucker punch got them again as Old Wulfrunians broke quickly to double their advantage.

Lichfield had produced enough chances to suggest the game wasn’t over and so it proved in a hectic 15 minute spell that started when Jordan Evans scored his third in as many games, before Ben Lund levelled with a powerful drive.

And the game turned around completely when Tom Green slotted home.

But the drama was far rom over as Old Wulfrunians levelled themselves when a curling strike beat City keeper Clough.

With no extra time, the game headed straight to penalties where Old Wulfunians missed their first two spot kicks, meaning strikes from Lund, Green, Oli Hayward and Dan Thurstance were able to secure the win.
